Every January first I pick one word to focus on for the year. For 2019, my word is walk. I walk almost every day, light rain or shine. Downpours, I just don’t do.
I spend a lot of time taking in my surroundings. I’m also on the hunt. Scoring money on a walk is always fun, no matter how little. Pennies I bring back to slip into my son’s ever-growing penny jar.
Rocks are great finds. I search for heart shaped rocks and collect small, flat stones. An artist I once saw made little pictures out of small, flat stones, things like trees, flowers and animals. I collect these stones because, in my mind, I am someone who will create this sort of art, too. Really, though, I will pick up any rock that catches my eye.
Lately small twigs, shaped like the letter Y, have been catching my eye. Today I found one of these Y shaped twigs, which I held on to and thought about for the rest of my walk.
I like these Y shaped pieces of wood. To me, they represent life choices, like a fork in the road. You can go left, you can go right (no political shenanigans here, tempting as that may be). And, I wondered, which way would I go?
The right, it’s the easy way. Weird as that seems. I decide that the right way is the known. It is uncomplicated. It is simple. Right is usually how I roll.
That is until it’s not working for me anymore.
The left way, that’s more difficult. The left takes more time and patience. The left means change. I have to work harder when I go left. Left means that I don’t know how things are going to turn out. Which can be very, very scary.
I think God calls us to do hard things. I think that He calls us to go left. And, by going left, the rewards are much sweeter. The payoff is larger. The great joys in life, they are found by going left.
I’m a gal who likes a plan, because life is just so much better with a plan. Today, I plan to go left.
